Anxiety Therapy Knoxville, TN
Find relief from overthinking, worry, and constantly feeling on-edge
Anxiety can make it difficult to feel fully present in your own life. Your mind may constantly jump ahead to what could go wrong, you might replay conversations, second-guessing decisions, struggle to relax, or feel responsible for keeping everything under control- including the emotions of those around you.
Sometimes you might feel like your anxiety is obvious, other times it might look like perfectionism, people-pleasing, overworking, irritability, avoidance or significant pressure to have your life together.
At Elevated Counseling in Knoxville, TN, I provide anxiety therapy to teens and adults who are ready to better understand their anxiety, develop practical ways to manage it, and feel more confident in navigating uncertainty.
The therapy process isn’t about getting rid of anxious thoughts or avoiding stressful situation. Instead, we’ll work together toward changing your relationship with anxiety so that it has less control over how you feel, what you do, and the choices that you make.
How Do You Know If You Have Anxiety?
You may find yourself:
Constantly worrying or overthinking
Replaying conversations in your head
Preparing for worst-case scenarios
Seeking reassurance from others
Feeling restless, tense, or unable to relax
Struggling with perfectionism or people pleasing
Avoiding situations that make you feel anxious
Experiencing panic attacks
Feeling responsible for others’ emotions
Having trouble sleeping
Struggling to set boundaries
Becoming highly critical when something goes wrong
You may even understand logically that your fears are unlikely while still feeling unable to stop the anxiety.
How Can Therapy Help?
Together, we will look at the roots of anxiety, the patterns that reinforce the anxiety, and work to understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors associated with anxiety.
This might look like:
Recognize anxiety before it becomes overwhelming
Interrupt cycles of worry and rumination
Respond differently to intrusive or catastrophic thoughts
Become more comfortable with uncertainty
Reduce avoidance
Set boundaries without excessive guilt
Communicate more assertively
Build confidence in your ability to handle difficult emotions
Reconnect with your values and priorities
Feel more present in your relationships and daily life
Evidence-Based Approaches to Treating Anxiety
Anxiety doesn’t look the same for everyone, so therapy shouldn’t either.
I use an integrative approach to anxiety treatment, drawing from evidence-based therapies and adapting our work to your needs, personality, experiences, and goals.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps you to recognize unhealthy and unhelpful thoughts and allows you to examine the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
We may work on recognizing the tendency to catastrophize, challenging rigid expectations, reduce negative self-talk, and developing more balance ways of interpreting stressful situations.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Sometimes the more that we try to get rid of anxiety, the worse it becomes. ACT takes a different approach. Instead of waiting until anxiety disappears before you live your life, ACT helps you learn how to make room for uncomfortable thoughts and emotions while continuing to move toward what maters most to you.
We may work on mindfulness, acceptance, cognitive diffusion, values clarification, and values-based action.
Over time, you can become better at noticing anxiety inducing thoughts and mindfully respond vs. reacting.
